This is an excellent
resource for anyone looking to get involved in one
of the best sports on earth. Jeff Kudo knows
his stuff. His good attitude, excellent technique and desire to help others have
always made him one of my favorite guys to roll with and those attributes are
evident in 10 Things...I only wish this guide would've been available ten years
ago when I started training. Highly recommended.

I've known Jeff Kudo for years, both as a friend and as a
fellow student of BJJ. The great thing about Jeff is, not only is he a student,
he is an enthusiast of the art. His love of BJJ is shown in this book as he is
giving people new to the sport, lessons and guidelines that took the rest of us
months or longer to learn.
The subjects Jeff
covers, such as Recognizing Dangerous Moves and knowing the Unwritten Code of
Conduct, are essential for establishing longevity in this sport. I have fallen
victim to an over-zealous training partner and my own novice ignorance of not
recognizing a potentially dangerous technique which resulted in a knee injury
and many missed training weeks.
This is a great
book in that it gives you advice on considerations before you begin training,
like how to research a gym that is appropriate for you. The closest gym is not
always the best one for you. The book also gives you a great base of fundamental
knowledge which will enable you to be more confident in your initial trainings.
Some of the basics covered in this book still proved to be beneficial to
myself, even after years of training. For example Jeff's Slower but Sturdier
Method for tying the Gi Belt is extremely functional. I was only taught the Fast
Method and I am constantly re-tying my belt.
Jeff has packaged months of learning into
an engaging and helpful format. This book is a needed supplement to any BJJ
practitioner's training. See you on the mat!!
Good luck,

Wow! I wish
I could have read Jeff's e-book before I started, especially Chapter 7, "Know
How To Avoid Training Barriers." I fell victim to the "last run of the day" in
only my second week of training and wound up getting a slight tear of my ac
joint which cost me two months of training, not to mention doctor visits and
physical therapy. It is very demoralizing and makes you question "Is it worth
it?" But if you follow Jeff's advice it will lead to a successful journey into
Brazilian jiu-jitsu and help you avoid the barriers many people face.
Also realizing that it's not a
normal gym where you can go solo and do your own thing. It's a group sport so
choosing the right school is paramount! Take Jeff's advice and observe a few
classes, talk to the teacher and the students. Don't rush into a contract and
get stuck at a school that doesn't fit your needs. Take your time, find a school
like I did with great teachers and students like Jeff. Jeff is someone I always
try to pair up with during drills or live rolling and also is someone I always
ask for pointers and tips. Do what I do and take Jeff's advice.

Wow! Very insightful and practical. This
is a must read for all (new and experienced) practitioners. I truly believe that
all potential practitioners should read Jeff's 10 Things I Wish I Knew Before I
Started Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu e-book before becoming a grappler. This book will
ease you into becoming a life-long grappler because it teaches you ways to
prevent/minimize injuries and burnouts. This short book gives so much insight
into things that would take a beginner months to learn (and some things they may
never learn before quitting due to injuries or frustrations). It's like having a
best friend with you who has been training for years showing you all the dos and
don'ts.
Chapter 5 is my favorite - Know about the
unwritten code of conduct. I wish everyone that I ever grappled against read and
adhered by this code of conduct. I could have saved myself a lot of pain and
missed training days due to injuries caused by others and myself. There isn't
one thing I like more than another in this chapter because I like EVERYTHING
Jeff talked about!
Thank you Jeff for sharing your knowledge
and experience with us and for putting it into such an easy to read e-book! I
highly recommend all practitioners to read this book.
