While I've found there are more than enough books about methods of training and step-by-step technique, there aren't many resources for people who aren't sure how to enter in to the sport or don't know the best ways to find the right school and instructor for them.

If you are new to the sport, you don't need an overly technical book that nitpicks through submissions and positions that you aren't even familiar with yet. You need a book that will serve as a foundation for the lessons you learn in the future.

FACT: Submission grappling can be dangerous.
FACT: It can be impossible to excel at a grappling school if you don't know the unspoken code of conduct.
FACT: In many Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) classes, the instructors DO NOT cover the basics on the first day.

Many submission grappling schools DO NOT have introductory classes and DO NOT cover introductory information before you begin. This can lead to injury and failure before you even begin.
Don't go into your first submission grappling class without prior knowledge of the basic holds and submissions!
Don't go into your first submission grappling class without knowing the unspoken code of ethics and grappling sportsmanship!

Dear submission grappling enthusiast,
picture of author Jeffery Kudo My name is Jeff Kudo, and I've spent years learning the intricacies of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling. Like many people just starting out in the sport, my friends and I began our grappling careers on the living room floor, racking up some unpleasant rug burns and almost crashing through the television more than a few times. Although we had fun, we soon realized that we weren't learning any real technique and we certainly weren't improving.

When I finally decided to join a gym, find an instructor, and learn actual method and technique, I realized I didn't know where to start. On my first day, I walked in apprehensively, wearing an old t-shirt and board shorts. I had no idea what to expect. It was a trial by fire - I didn't have a mouthpiece or a cup, I didn't know what to do when someone asked me to roll, and I certainly didn't know to tell him that it was my first class ever.

I learned each and every lesson the hard way over a series of weeks and months: I didn't know to buy grappling shorts until the grommets on my board shorts scratched my legs up. I didn't know to get a mouthpiece until I cracked a molar defending a rear naked choke. I didn't know to get a cup until I had accidentally gotten kicked in the groin a few times.

Even though I was being taught great lessons in the art of submission grappling, I felt that I was left alone to learn the basics of the sport and culture. Similarly, when a friend of mine began his first Brazilian jiu-jitsu class, he was equally uninformed. He rolled with the wrong people, didn't understand the limits of his body, sustained several injuries, and quit the sport altogether within a month.

Don't let your first months of jiu-jitsu go to waste!
Don't end up injured in your first weeks of training!
Don't accidentally pick a school that isn't right for you!
Don't end up quitting for a preventable reason!

My ebook, TEN THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE I STARTED BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU will prevent you from making mistakes in the vital first months of training.

While your classmates and grappling partners will be struggling for months to learn the basics of the art and the culture, you will have a comfortable foundation of knowledge to build on and YOU WILL EXCEL.

Especially with the recent popularity of the UFC and mixed martial arts, more men and women than ever are joining Brazilian jiu-jitsu schools and submission grappling gyms. Many of these new fighters are enthusiastic but ignorant - they don't know how to act in a gym or how to keep themselves and others safe from injury.

DON'T LOOK LIKE A ROOKIE.

With the help of TEN THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE I STARTED BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU you can walk into class wearing the right clothes, using the right words, and acting the part of a serious student of the sport.

SEPARATE YOURSELF FROM THE PACK FROM DAY ONE.

In TEN THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE I STARTED BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU, you will learn:

  • Basic BJJ vocabulary
  • Basic BJJ positions
  • How to find and choose the right school or gym
  • What to wear and how to tie your belt
  • The psychological aspects of grappling
  • The basics of training and conditioning
  • The unwritten code of conduct
  • How to avoid training barriers
  • How to avoid injuries and other health risks
  • How to train for a competition

Many students waste training time learning lessons the hard way. This leads to lost time and preventable injuries. Be the beginner who is already ahead of the class!

WHAT IS TEN THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE I STARTED BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU?

After taking years of Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes and watching beginners struggle to learn the basics on their own, class after class, I decided to do something about it. Although there were many books on practicing jiu-jitsu, jiu-jitsu history, and jiu-jitsu fighter biographies, there were NO resources for beginner fighters who want to start out in the sport while being safe and smart.

TEN THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE I STARTED BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU is a 31-page no-nonsense guide on how to successfully break into the sport of submission grappling without fumbling through months of learning lessons the hard way.  Also included: 1 hour and 17 minute MP3 audio narration available for immediate download to your favorite MP3 player or just listen to it on the web!

Over ten easy-to-understand chapters, I outline the best way to systematically enter into the BJJ and grappling world, with minimal injuries, with no embarrassing moments, and with no concerns about having picked the right school and the right instructor.

Breaking into the world of Brazilian jiu-jitsu can be a TRIAL BY FIRE. Be smarter than that - arm yourself with knowledge before you even step on the mat. You will get results faster, you will be able to compete sooner, and you will pass the other beginners by.

Think that you'll learn everything from your instructor? Maybe, but only after months of lessons and training. If you learn the basics before hand, you can propel yourself into earnest training immediately without having to learn lessons the long way and the hard way. Here are just a few things you'll read about in TEN THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE I STARTED BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU:

Dozens of vocabulary words that you'll hear on the mat each day. Not knowing the basic words that BJJ practitioners use could not only slow down your learning curve but also lead to unneeded injury.

  • The Six Keys to Finding the Right Gym and Instructor. Different people need different teachers and different environments - don't get stuck in a place or with a teacher that doesn't fit your needs or your style. Gyms can be very, very different and while you might whither at one school, you could excel at another. Let Jeff Kudo help you choose wisely!
  • An entire chapter on clothing, gear, and how to use it. Don't show up to your gym not knowing what to wear or how to wear it. Show your classmates and your instructor that you are serious about your sport by looking and acting like a pro. Get the best gi for your needs, learn how to tie your belt quickly and effectively (with helpful illustrations), and learn about gear like cups, mouth guards, and headgear.
  • The three main basics of training and conditioning. Breathing, hydrating, and concentration seem like three simple lessons to learn about any sport. But do you know the particulars of these three keys and how they apply specifically to grappling?
  • The seven rules of the unwritten code of grappling conduct. These are the rules that you are supposed to learn through experience and through trial and error. Make things easier for yourself and come in to your training understanding how you should act and how to look professional. If you break some of these rules, you can get kicked out of your school for good or even hurt a training partner - understand the sport before you step on the mat!
  • Over ten BJJ positions and the pros and cons of each. While you will learn these positions in your first weeks and months of classes, this helpful guide will be priceless when you forget the difference between full guard and half guard.
  • Four ways to avoid training barriers. Even if you are familiar with the basics of the sport, you may still run into trouble when trying to reach the next level. Let Kudo help you understand that sometimes pushing too hard can be detrimental.
